A churro is a deep-fried pastry, typically enjoyed as a snack or dessert. It’s made from a dough that’s piped into hot oil in long, thin strips and fried until golden and crispy. After frying, churros are often rolled in a cinnamon-sugar mixture for extra flavour. They’re commonly served with dipping sauces like chocolate, dulce de leche, or caramel sauce. Dulce de leche is a sweet, creamy caramel-like spread or sauce made by slowly heating sweetened condensed milk until it thickens and turns a rich golden-brown colour.
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
1 cup water
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp oil
For Frying:
Avocado Oil
For Rolling:
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
For Dipping:
Dulce de leche or caramel sauce
Chocolate sauce
Instructions:
Make the Dough:
In a saucepan, bring 1 cup water, 1 tbsp sugar, ½ tsp salt, and 2 tbsp oil to a boil. Stir until sugar and salt dissolve.
Prepare the Dough:
Once the liquid boils, remove it from the heat and stir in 1 cup flour. Stir continuously until the mixture comes together and there’s no visible flour left. Let the dough cool to room temperature.
Heat the Oil:
While the dough is cooling, heat oil in a cast iron pan over medium heat to 375°F (190°C) for frying.
Pipe the Churros:
Once the dough has cooled to room temperature, transfer it to a piping bag fitted with a star tip.
Fry the Churros:
Pipe the dough directly into the hot oil, cutting it into pieces with a pair of scissors. Fry until golden brown and crisp.
Roll in Cinnamon Sugar:
Mix ½ cup sugar with 1 tsp cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Once the churros are done, roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Serve:
Serve immediately with dulce de leche or caramel sauce and chocolate sauce for dipping.
